Where can eligible students attend school?

McKinney-Vento eligible students have a legal right to stay in their current school or a prior school they attended before becoming homeless. If remaining in such a school is not in the student's best interest, the student can immediately enroll in a new school where they are staying - even without providing any of the documents normally required for enrollment. The "best interests" of the student is determined by the student's parent, legal guardian, or the student him/herself who is enrolling on his/her own, in conjunction with school district staff. It is presumed that it is in the best interest of the student to attend his/her school of origin unless the parent disagrees. Remaining in the same school is preferable because research has shown that students lose 6-8 months of academic progress with every school move.
