Summer Associates

Many MacDonald Illig associates are recruited through our summer associate program.  Our program is well-established, respected, and multi-faceted.  At MacDonald Illig we are constantly striving to offer an opportunity to law students that not only provides experience in legal research and writing, but one that immerses our summer associates in the real-world aspects of a flourishing legal career. Consistent with our firm's culture, we are seeking individuals whose collaboration and dedication will assist in our clients' successes while simultaneously contributing to the collegial atmosphere in our offices.  Our attorneys and staff are committed to getting to know you, not only as a law student, but as a person.  We want to enhance your legal, professional, and social development to ensure your future legal career is a success.

What to expect.

Each summer, we typically hire 4 to 6 first and second year law school students, each of whom receive significant individual attention and guidance. The program is coordinated by two attorneys who meet weekly with the group to ensure continued communication at all levels of the firm.  Summer associates' assignments are diverse - exposing you to as many practice areas and attorneys as possible.   Most assignments involve legal research and the drafting of memoranda, pleadings, briefs and a range of transactional documents.

In addition, an important part of your development is the opportunity to see our attorneys "in action." At least once each week, you will accompany an attorney to a professional activity of your choice, including client meetings, closings, depositions, oral arguments, and trials.

It's about more than the law.

We also invite you to participate in a number of social activities throughout the summer to get to know your peers as well as the MacDonald Illig attorneys. Events often include lunches, dinners, various Erie must-see destinations and experiences, and impromptu gatherings.

Finally, we understand the importance of feedback to enable the growth of our summer associates as well as our program.  Individualized reviews of completed assignments will be completed by our attorneys throughout the summer, formal and informal evaluations will be held, and at the conclusion of the summer, we ask you to provide us feedback regarding your experience at MacDonald Illig.  Overall, we seek to leave you with a realistic preview of your future as an attorney at MacDonald Illig.
