Is an employer obligated to grant leaves of absence to employees?

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Pennsylvania law and local ordinances, employers are required to provide leaves of absence for reasonable periods of time as a reasonable accommodation to employees with a disability. Employers with 50 or more employees are required to provide leaves of absence under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) for up to 12 workweeks in a 12-month period. Once the 12 workweeks of leave is exhausted, entitlement to additional periods of leave depends on the facts and circumstances, and the employer's policy and practice.
