Can an employee be terminated for excessive absenteeism if the reason for the absences is illness?

Generally, illness does not excuse employees from meeting their employer's attendance requirements. However, employers should carefully consider whether absent employees are eligible for intermittent Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) leave and/or intermittent leave as an accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) or related state or local laws.
