Are schools responsible for identifying students who are experiencing homelessness?
Yes. School personnel are solely responsible for making sure that all students who are experiencing homelessness are promptly and proactively identified. Students experiencing homelessness on their own and with their families do not need to know that they are eligible under the McKinney-Vento Act, use the words McKinney-Vento or homeless, or assert their rights in order to be eligible. That is the school's job.
